On Monday, the Shooter Avani Lekhara became the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games, firing her way to the top of the podium in the R-2 women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 event. The 19 years old girl from Jaipur bagged gold, India’s first at Tokyo 2020, in the women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1 with a world record score of 249.6.

This is also India’s first gold medal in shooting in Paralympic Games. Avani Lekhara who sustained spinal cord injuries in a car accident in  the year 2012, finished with a world record equalling total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record.  Lekhara lead the field after a solid start and maintained lead to secure the gold.

Overall, Avani Lekhara is the 4th Indian sportsperson to win  the Paralympic gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar in 1972 , javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia  in 2004 and 2016, and the high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan in 2016.

The shooter Avani Lekhara who scripted history on Monday, said, “I can not describe this feeling, I am feeling like I am on top of the world. It is unexplainable.”

This is Avani Lekhara’ first major international medal. Lekhara had finished 4th in the last world championship in 2019.
